1. Why Pursue a Postgraduate Degree at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Hong Kong?​

Modern psychiatry is a complex discipline involving neuroscience, psychology, social science, philosophy, spirituality, and many others. It is a combination of neuronal processes, subjective experiences and social interactions. If you are interested in this complex topic and would like to examine it in a scientific manner, you should join our postgraduate programme.
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hong Kong has always been one of the leading research psychiatry departments in Hong Kong. Our department has 10 full-time academic staff, with strength in the areas of cognitive neuropsychiatry, genetics, geriatric psychiatry, health psychology, neurodevelopmental disorder, neuroimaging, psychotic disorder, sleep and mood disorder, and women's mental health. The research at the Department is of high quality, and the staff has a very successful record in obtaining research funding.
The postgraduate programme can be one to four years in length and provides research training in laboratory- or clinical-based studies. There are regular research seminar, case conference, journal club and speaker series. Students are strongly encouraged to present their research findings at suitable scientific and professional meetings and to submit their work for review and publication in international refereed journals. Many students at the Department have obtained awards and scholarships for their excellent work. It should be noted that "postgraduate degrees" means postgraduate degrees by research. These degrees do NOT act as professional qualifications in Hong Kong and it is not a clinical training programme.

2. What sort of Postgraduate Degree Programme is available at the Department of Psychiatry?

Research postgraduate programme

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
MPhil and PhD are research programmes focusing on research work and the award of the degree depends mainly on the assessment of the thesis. Candidates will conduct research work under the supervision of at least one teacher of the Department.
The study period of full-time MPhil programme is 24 months and for PhD, it can be 36 or 48 months.

Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med])

The MRes[Med] is a 1-year programme focusing on clinical and research topics. Only undergraduates of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme are eligible to enroll in the MRes[Med].

Both research and taught postgraduate programmes can be taken full-time or part-time.

8. What are the Career prospects of Postgraduate Students?

On completion of the postgraduate degrees, students should see themselves and be seen by others as professional medical researchers who are capable of carrying out high quality research on questions of genuine significance and thus fully prepared to contribute to the advancement of knowledge within the discipline. Many of our graduates hold academic positions in universities and research institutions and top management positions in the public and private sectors in Hong Kong and overseas.
